Mac Mini - The Best Carputer ?

The wikipedia definition of the carputer:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Carputer

Every normal person wants a full computer built into their car, correct?
You want to play CDs, DVDs, MP3s and surf the web. You want a small box with a simple touch screen interface, a GUI that looks good on a small screen, remote control, gps satnav, bluetooth and Wi-Fi connections. You want all this for around £500. It looks like the intel mac mini with built-in frontrow software may fit the bill perfectly:

With the introduction of Apple's Mac mini, a whole new realm of inexpensive in-car computing and entertainment is now possible. The small form factor of the Mac mini makes it a perfect solution for installation in areas with limited space - like a car. The robust feature set of the Mac mini, along with the multi-media power of Mac OS X, makes for an excellent platform to create a complete mobile media system. - macvroom.com

As a comparison this windows based carputer unit just looks nasty. I'm no mac fanboy but Windows XP does not 'pimp' anything:

However the main advantage of the mac mini over the above monstrosity is that when you get bored of having a carputer you can just pull it out and use it as a normal desktop machine.

The Digg Swarm - The coolest way to view digg.com

The coolest way to view digg is via the swarm:
http://labs.digg.com/swarm/

In real time you can see who is digging what stories. Stories grow as they get more diggs and elastic connections are made between stories as diggers move between them.

Diggers are solid yellow blobs that grow larger as that user diggs more stories. Hover over the blob to see that user's name and click on the blob to go to that user's digg history.

Stories with a large number of diggs are yellow circles. Upcoming stories are white circles. The circles grow as users digg them. Hover over the circle to see the story title. Click on the circle to see a story summary and link to the story page.

When a digger just diggs every upcoming story he finds he becomes a fat bloated yellow blob and ties together a bunch of insignificant stories in a big clump:

The best way to sift through all the upcoming stories is to use the cloud view:

Web 2.0 - 24 months in

After about 24 months of web 2.0 this is what wikipedia makes of it all:

Web 2.0, a phrase coined by O'Reilly Media in 2004,[1] refers to a perceived or proposed second generation of Internet-based services—such as social networking sites, wikis, communication tools, and folksonomies—that emphasize online collaboration and sharing among users. O'Reilly Media, in collaboration with MediaLive International, used the phrase as a title for a series of conferences, and since 2004 some members of certain technical and marketing communities have adopted and loosely adapted the phrase.
While interested parties continue to debate the definition of a Web 2.0 application, a Web 2.0 web-site may exhibit some basic characteristics. These might include:

* "Network as platform" — delivering (and allowing users to use) applications entirely through a browser. See also Web operating system.
* Users owning the data on the site and exercising control over that data.
* An architecture of participation and democracy that encourages users to add value to the application as they use it.
* A rich, interactive, user-friendly interface based on Ajax or similar frameworks.
* Some social-networking aspects.

The concept of Web-as-participation-platform captures many of these characteristics. Bart Decrem, founder and former CEO of Flock calls Web 2.0 the "participatory Web"[citation needed], and regards Web-as-information-source as Web 1.0.

Gun That Can Shoot Round Corners

The front section can be bent up to 60° to the left or the right, allowing a soldier to shoot around a wall or door without exposing any part of themselves to enemy fire.

The weapon is comprised of a handgun fitted to the front of the system and fired from the back section using an ordinary trigger. A video camera at the front is linked to a small high-resolution screen at the back. This lets the user see precisely where the gun is pointing without poking their head or hands out in the firing line.

The camera incorporates crosshairs, auto-focus and an infrared filter for use in low light. Pulling a grip underneath the weapon quickly snaps it from its bent configuration into a straight one, meaning it can then be used normally.

Time's Person of the Year: You

Time magazine has named 'You' person of the year.

Well done 'You' !

It's a story about community and collaboration on a scale never seen before. It's about the cosmic compendium of knowledge Wikipedia and the million-channel people's network YouTube and the online metropolis MySpace. It's about the many wresting power from the few and helping one another for nothing and how that will not only change the world, but also change the way the world changes.

The tool that makes this possible is the World Wide Web. Not the Web that Tim Berners-Lee hacked together (15 years ago, according to Wikipedia) as a way for scientists to share research. It's not even the overhyped dotcom Web of the late 1990s. The new Web is a very different thing. It's a tool for bringing together the small contributions of millions of people and making them matter. Silicon Valley consultants call it Web 2.0, as if it were a new version of some old software. But it's really a revolution.

Get your photos in a glossy magazine

This site is a place for photographers to upload their high-res pictures:
http://jpgmag.com/

Pictures are voted on and reviewed. The best pictures are included in a glossy magazine.
All the pictures that have been published are here:
http://jpgmag.com/photos/published/small

From the site:

JPG is not just another photo sharing site - it's a community that's come together to create a photo magazine. And that photo magazine is not just about photography - it's about a specific kind of photography.

We're about mostly unmodified photos. That means we do not accept photos that have been overly Photoshopped. Adjustments to color and sharpness is just fine, of course. Just keep it real, baby. Here's a handy rule: If anything has been digitally added or removed (well, besides dust), it's probably not right for JPG.
